I have always been fascinated by people, figures and faces, and I have always derived great satisfaction from painting and drawing them. I strive to capture some of the hidden colours in human skin, and the subtleties of human expression. I used to limit myself to oil paints, but since I have become a mother I have found it difficult to devote the long hours necessary for oil painting. Thus I have discovered the joys of drawing with conte crayons, and I am amazed at the possibilities of this medium. Since I have become a new mother I have found my interests reflect my new role. Both my submissions to this show have to do with mother hood, and the beauty of a new child. My drawing titled “Madonna and Child” is in keeping with the tradition of Madonna and child portraits, except that the figures are nude. I used gold leaf in halos around each head, which was directly inspired by religious icons of the 14th century. This portrait is in no way meant to be subversive, instead it is meant to show the beauty and humility of the mother and child relationship. It depicts the beauty and imperfections of a human mother, as well as the transcendent qualities of the Universal Mother. I hope to show something of the divine in the ordinary. The drawing titled “Bathtime” is a simple figure study of my new son. It’s meant to show the beauty of a human baby in the tub.
